Enchanted (2007)

29 Feb 2008

Plot summary:

Classic Disney animation meets contemporary urban chaos when a frightened princess is banished from her magical animated homeland to modern-day New York City in a romantic comedy penned by Bill Kelly (Blast from the Past), directed by Kevin Lima (Tarzan), and featuring music by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) lives in the blissful cartoon world of Andalasia, where magical beings frolic freely and musical interludes punctuate every interaction. Though Princess Giselle is currently engaged to be married to the handsome Prince Edward (James Marsden), her fate takes a turn for the worse when the villainous Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) banishes her to the unforgiving metropolis of New York City. As the cruelty of the big city soon begins to wear down the fairy-tale exterior of the once carefree princess, the frightened Giselle soon finds herself falling for a friendly but flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) whose kind compassion has helped her to survive in this strange and dangerous new world.

Enchanted (2007)Ramblings: Romantic and funny, I loved it! And also, I love, love, LOVE the music! Ah, where to begin to tell a bit more…

Ok, so one thing that was a bit strange was how old Giselle (Amy Adams) looked like non-animated and I’m not really talking about a big issue, just something I didn’t expect and that made the movie kind of questionable a few times.

The actors were all awesome, Adams was very believable as a princess (or soon-to-be-princess) thrown out of her fairytale world and Dempsey was just so lovable from the beginning to the end. Sometimes Marsden’s character, Prince Edward, seemed a bit overdone, as in “we know Disney movies are cornier than corn but a prince doesn’t have to be that chivalrous and deranged”. The ending was perhaps a bit too predictable, but then again all fairytales are.

Score: 4½ out of 5

Juno (2007)

29 Feb 2008

Plot:

JUNO stars Ellen Page as the title character, a whip-smart teen confronting an unplanned pregnancy by her classmate Bleeker (Michael Cera). With the help of her hot best friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno finds her unborn child a “perfect” set of parents: an affluent suburban couple, Mark and Vanessa (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner), longing to adopt. Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents (JK Simmons and Allison Janney) as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs.

Juno (2007)

Ramblings: There has been alot of fuss going on about this movie, it’s so good, Americans want it to win an Oscar (it actually one the Oscar for best original screenplay), yada yada yada, so I figured I had to see it and of course the trailer had awaken my interest, too.

I really do like movies like this, but there were alot of things that made the movie a bit bad. First of all I have never in my life met a person like Juno, so it was quite hard to imagine her personality to be “real”. I could have never imagined such a calm reaction to her pregnancy from her parents and what’s up with that Bleeker kid?! Seriously, you don’t get a girl pregnant, then basically not even try to interact with her before the baby is about to pop out and when you actually talk to her you whine about a broken heart when she says she doesn’t like you. I don’t really know why Juno stopped talking to Bleeker either.

Also, I was so sad when Juno didn’t end up in a relationship with Mark (yes, things like that are mental fetish of mine). Yeah, I know it would have been even less realistic but WHATEVS. Just thinking about it tingles my movie-with-awesome-story-ohmigod-glands.

Score: 3½ out of 5

Fierce and Fabulous

27 Feb 2008

Well maybe not, but I’m feeling pretty good anyway despite having to get up early for several reasons:

a) the water is going to be shut off at least until noon so I had to head to the shower at 8am before they actually shut it off (at 9am)

b) I need to get my hands on a copy of a certain book about popular culture and from what I’ve noticed others want it too (overnight loan, you can only have it for a day, the “normal” copies are all taken)

c) I also need to visit Mr Porter on his office hour starting from noon to discuss my pop culture essay

Groan.

Rat Spa

Ove and Egil stopped smelling like Pee and Poo once more.

Ove:

Ove Ove Ove

Ove had a pooping marathon right before his bath. As usual. After all that was cleared we could actually get to business ad he sat calmly in my palm while a washed him, with one or two squeaky sounds. Good boy. He also wagged his tail alot when I dried him with the towel, I wonder if he was happy or if he just wanted to scratch my eyes out :P

Egil:

Egil EgilEgil

Egil wasn’t as eager as Ove to get washed, but he behaved quite nicely too.

That way I would have to feel so bad each time I buy something that is not 100% necessary to have for survival purposes :( Money doesn’t make you happy blah, blah, BLAH. Yes it does stupid.

Today I bought an bright blue sleeveless top and a light gray cardigan, the look awesome (and bright blue is one of the colors this spring and summer together with bright red, both go perfectly with black and grey) but it cost me over 50 euros too. So yeah, now I’m sort of feeling satisfied yet lousy which sucks since my mood hasn’t been particularly positive lately anyway. Boo effing hoo.

Jonas GardellAwesomeness! Jonas Gardell is coming to town with his most recent show “Tillfällig Gäst i Ditt Liv” (= Temporary Guest in Your Life) – I’m so going to buy a ticket. Waiting for a friends reply on if she would like to come with me or not, but this is so awesome I will go alone if I have to (which feels kind of weird, I mean, since when do you go to for example the cinema by yourself?). Ohmygod I’ve wanted to see one of his shows for such a long time! Also, I love comedy performances (and Gardell has so much more to offer inbetween too). Last time I saw a stand-up performance by André Wickström and Henrik Schyffert, which was great fun. Woot!

a) He turns up at our door in the middle of the night drunk as a skunk trying to get in with his key and falling asleep periodically snoring like no man has ever snored before.

b) He leaves the water running and experiences sudden realization when it is too late: our kitchen beneath is already experiencing heavy monsoon rain and parts of the roof are falling down. It takes months to fix the damage.

c) It’s Sunday, I would love to sleep until noon. My upstairs neighbor decides to start renovating his apartment right above my head, making in literally impossible to sleep until noon. Now I figure these renovation things take weeks to finish…

!@#€%&£!
